Using Visual Studio Codespaces with .NET Core

Visual studio Codespaces is an online IDE services running on a virtual machine somewhere in Azure. This the browser-based IDE. Yes, y ou heard it right you can run and debug your project in your browser without having install Visual Studio

It is an IDE with less features than the particular Visual Studio and it might be used on Linux and Mac Platforms. With the discharge of this version Microsoft is trying to deal with the concerns of the Developer community who actually work on Linux platforms.

It is a greatest learning tool for beginners and new languages, frameworks, and software tools.

Visual studio Codespaces is one type of online working system, with the help of Codespaces more people can work on same project. For example,two developer can work on one branch similar project but different location at that time visual studio Codespacesis required.

Before getting to ASP.NET Core there are fewthings to configure from GitHub. Visual Studio Codespaces provides a simple way to learn Rust. Just click on the Visual Studio Codespaces button in this repository and you now have a working on Rust project to experiment with Codespaces!

On tooling side there are three options:

(1) Online editor – Limitation of Visual Studio Code running in browser

(2) Visual Studio – There’s experimental support for Codespaces in Visual Studio 2019

(3) Visual Studio Code – There’s extension available to work with Codespaces

Creating a Codespaces using browser was not possible. UI found only one Azure subscription for my account and sadly it was one of those where we can't use services without confirmation by subscription owner. We didn’t find any option to get rid of this issue on google.

You can manage to create Code space using Visual Studio Code and it was possible there to select correct Azure subscription, resource group etc. When we create Codespaces at that time we got few errors but on second attempt ourCodespaces was created successfully.

Significant steps to create Codespaces:

(1) First step of creatingCodespaces is to have a Git repository accessible from internet.

(2) Create Azure subscription if you don’t have one

(3) Install Visual Studio Code if you don’t have it

(4) Install Codespaces and Azure Account extensions

(5) Open Remote Explorer and click on “Create new Codespaces”

If you have already joined in the visual code Codespacesbefore Access Program, you will be able to display the menu like below:

If you do not join in Visual code Codespaces than login and create Codespaces.

Click the menu open with GitHub codespaces button, and you will be able to access to all project related files within GitHub Codespaces.

You can be asked for the following information:

Visual Studio Code was createdCodespaces and connect to work with it. Use .NET new command to create application if your repository is empty.

(1) Instance type: – That was decide how much resources have the environment that runs your application

(2) Suspend:– Suspend was decide how long is the idle time after what Codespace is suspended.

If you look closely, each VS Codespaces was enabled repository has a devcontainer folder. Inside this folder, the Dockerfile specifies how to build the Docker container for the development environment.
